Commercial Rainbow Trout moved to the Pond for the Winter.
As part of the normal operations of the Hatchery, we sometimes need to move fish around to make room. Our commercial Rainbow Trout were becoming too crowded inside, so we have moved them outside to the pond, where they will thrive for the winter. We will likely lose some to predators, otter, and mink in the winter, heron and osprey in the summer, but most will survive. This year we are looking at the purchase of a large net to cover the pond in the spring, and keep the birds out. These fish are around 2-3cm at this time. By mid April, they should be around 15cm or 6 inches, and ready for sale.
